Tribal Edge Initiation is a “coming of age” or rites of passage program for young people who are ready to experience a personal challenge and an initiation into healthy, empowered adolescence. It is an opportunity for our youth to experience something that has worked for thousands of years. The initiation process is not only a natural step toward adulthood, but into hu-manhood and thus plays a crucial role in helping to ensure the survival of individuals and their community as a whole Tribal Edge initiations take place over the span of eight days, with a group of 4-8 young people from ages 12-15. Male and female programs are held seperately at the Tribal Edge wilderness training center. Through the process of personal duties, core routines, physical and values training, personal test/ challenges and ceremony the participant will pass through the stages of Separation, Transformation and Integration. By providing a healthy blueprint for young people they can realize that they are not alone, that they can find their place of status within their community and that they, too, one day will be called upon to serve the youth, as wise elders and leaders.
The Oath of the Kamana
"I will honor the earth mother by walking in harmony with nature. In my search for the rite of passage I will walk with an honorable purpose and in a sacred manner through the wilderness. I will not stray from the trail of the warrior, the trail to true adulthood. I take this oath before my Creator, the Great Spirit.”
Ingwe- the leopard (1914-2005)
Grandfather of Wilderness Awareness School
“The Young Men’s Initiation was great. For me the course has totally opened my mind into a whole new view of what life and the wilderness has to offer.” Austin -2005
